This
was our first effort and we think we started off with a
roar. Corvettes at Carlisle '98 was held on August 28 -
30 and Olegna Productions' cameras were there capturing
the action.
The
theme of the 1998 show was pace and race and
the RPM's were redlining all weekend long. Carlisle Events
invited drivers who raced Corvettes during the '50s to the
'70s to participate in a Racer's Roundtable. Many of these
legendary racers had not seen one another since their duels
on the track many years ago. Not only does the tape have
an overview of the event, but because of the roundtable
several once-in-a-lifetime events were put into place that
became the highlight of this production.
You'll
learn the fascinating history of the Purple People Eater.
Follow this classic from it's glory days as the Corvette
Jim Jeffords drove in 1959 to take his second SCCA B-production
championship title; to its days as a paint mixing table;
and to its restoration and surprise reintroduction to Jeffords
nearly 40 years later. You'll see Jeffords and the car's
next owner/driver, Bob Spooner, take the Purple People Eater
for a lap around the Carlisle fairgrounds, then hear what
it was like to race Corvettes during the solid axle days
from these two race-winning veterans. You'll also see racers
like the famous Stars and Stripes BFG Corvettes
and the L-88 Rebel Corvette and its stable mate, the 1969
Corvette Lemans Race Car.
Other
highlights include all the favorite activities that make
Corvettes at Carlisle so exciting, like the downtown parade;
the fun display field celebrity picks; Kids at Carlisle;
the swap meet; the Corvette Coral and All-Corvette Auction;
and the grand finale, the give-away of a 1978 Corvette
Indy Pace Car.
You'll
see tons of Corvettes and meet many of their owners. Find
out about the C-5 Registry. Hear from the event's organizers
Chip Miller and Bill Miller and the first lady of the
Corvette, Elfi Arkus-Duntov. You'll also meet another
very special lady, Sandy Labree, and learn about her famous
Corvette.
As
always, Chip Miller invited several primo Corvettes to be
on display at the show. These Vettes, designated as a Chip's
Choice, are sequentially numbered and usually related
to the theme of that year's show. The 1998 show featured
four; fine examples of model years 1978, 1986, 1995 and
1998 Corvettes that were used to pace the Indianapolis 500.
You'll also get an up-close look at some legendary Corvette
racers that ripped up the tracks at Watkins Glen, Sebring,
Lemans and Daytona.
